SANEline Volunteer

We are looking for warm, compassionate, understanding people who are good communicators to join our services team as a volunteer. You don’t need to be a mental health expert: empathy matters more than academic qualifications or experience, and we’re keen to hear from people of all ages and walks of life.

As a volunteer, you will make a real difference and support people affected by mental illness. Our trained volunteers support on our helpline, textcare and email service. All of our volunteering opportunities are available at our office in London.

Helpline and Textcare volunteers can volunteer between 4pm and 10pm.

Our high-quality training programme will help you develop the knowledge and skills you need to support the people who turn to us for help, and we’ll continue to help you develop throughout your time with us. Many of our volunteers find they benefit from these skills in their professional and personal lives as well.

What makes us different?

  • Specialist out of hours service (mental illness).
  • We will develop and support you to make compassionate and meaningful connection with people in acute distress.
  • High-quality training and ongoing professional support.
  • Volunteers are at the heart of and completely integral to everything we do at SANE.

Volunteering roles we have available

SANEline: Answering calls to our telephone helpline, open from 4pm to 10pm every day of the year.

Textcare: Writing text messages offering emotional support and connection.

What our volunteers say about us

Our volunteers make such a difference to the people that contact us, and get a huge amount out of it personally, as just one of our current volunteers explains:

I find the work deeply valuable and important. I can honestly see the integrity of the work and the value that it has for people who need support.
