Trailblazers not enough to repair a broken system

The launch of 25 trailblazer sites where a new NHS mental health workforce dedicated to supporting children in schools and colleges will be created has been announced today.

Responding to the announcement, Marjorie Wallace, Chief Executive of SANE, says: “The number of children and young people with mental health problems is reaching epidemic proportions, so we welcome any measure that aims to improve access to treatment for children and families.

“Our concern is that this involves creating entirely new support teams from scratch, at the expense of existing services currently buckling under the strain. These few trailblazer sites will meet the needs of only a tiny fraction of the tens of thousands of young people who, even when referred by their GP, are turned away from specialist services each year.

“It is a tragic missed opportunity, when what is needed is increased funds to recruit and train more doctors and nurses for every trust to repair this broken system.”
