Hi all need some advice had an appointment with new psychiatrist today didn’t go so well

Postby beetroot » Thu Nov 23, 2017 12:54 pm

Hi I’m an adult male I have adhd and anxiety I have seen psychiatrists and psychologists all my life from sinse I was a kid afterwards I followed up with adult mental health team however I can never keep up appointments and always usual drop out due to my condition I also have really bad anxiety and the severe mood swings I have extreme highs and lows at the moment am extremely low almost as if am in hibernation all I do is sleep 16 hours at a time wake up still feel exhausted I feel so depressed like I cannot cope with life anymore so I took my gps advise as he has told me there is nothing he can do for me I require assistance from psychiatry services and agreed to go see psychiatric services again after a short wait my appointment was today

So it turns out my old psychiatrist retired and I had to see a new guy I saw him for five minutes and he basically said it’s all part of my condition keep taken medication nothing else he can do I should get a routine an some structure in my day sounds like you have sad seasonal affective disorder and then handed me a leaflet about stress reduction classes

My question is is that it lol do I just get it on with it nowI never got another appointment his advice about my crippling depression feeling of not being able to cope and struggling to get thru each day was to get some structure to my day and go to a stress reduction class I have really bad social anxiety I’ve never attend a class with other people

I’m a bit confused as to what happens from here a mean he said something about sad I don’t think I have sad but was that him disagnosis me is it diagnosis lol I really help with the mood swings and the anxiety I’m struggling on my own and today basically felt the psychiatrist basically told me there’s nothing he can do it parts of my condition

Hi there!
I am sorry that you have had such a difficult and unsettling time while seeing the new psychiatrist.
I do have to say, you psychiatrist only sees you for an hour max and maybe reads your notes. He/she doesn't know you, particularly as this is your first appointment with him/her. The advice sounds a tad simplistic.
Well-done for going to your appointment though.
I can think of a few ideas, as you do not feel comfortable in groups, how about an online CBT course, that might help a little bit with managing the anxiety? GPs surgeries are given grants so that patients can do the courses.
hope this helps.

Hi,

Sorry to hear that you feel so low and so lethargic. I'm quite annoyed myself at reading how your psychiatrist behaved during your session. The advice about getting help fro gp to do course are great also , (I didn't realise this, I may also seek that out for myself) I would definitely send an email to gp and to the organisation that the psychiatrist works at. Just listing the following

It should have been a consultation and assessment as it was your first time seeing him,
However it was not, he diagnosed you ..which has not helped you at all and you require further sessions.
You feel you require further support and would benefit from the set hourly sessions as instructed by your GP,
Due to your anxiety you are unable to attend social settings at present and in order to take steps towards recovery, you require support of one to one sessions first.
You can also say in email, that by having the sessions that will begin to create structure in your day, which will be extremely helpful.

I've written it like that, so that hopefully if you decide to send an email you can just copy an paste, takes the hard work out itv it. Your entitled to support and just keep asking until you get the right support fir you, your referral should not have been a one off referral, and if he can't assist, he should find a service that can, not fob you off with leaflets.

Hope this helps, all the best .

It sounds like you need to see him again and ask for a more in depth assessment of your situation. Either that or a different psychiatrist. It could also be a physical problem such as chronic fatigue syndrome or a hormonal deficiency. So I would also make an appointment with a GP. Don't let one bad appointment put you off getting the help that you need. It sucks that you have to fight for it, but please do and if you have someone that would come to the appointments with you than please bring someone. Doctors are sometimes more thorough with other people there.

Thank you to Teamn and Amaya above for your input. I know that you were writing to beetroot, but your replies really helped me.
I had been to see a psychologist at the local surgery last week. She had not met me before and she had not read my notes.
It was an exercise in which I felt she was doing her best to humiliate me. I went for support with losing weight, her question..did I ever eat fruit, and other patronising, demeaning questions.

So, thank you for what you have written. I will be asking to see a different psychologist and I might be writing a complaint too.
