SANE comment on the study by the Royal College of Psychiatrists that finds England needs hundreds of new hospital beds
Added: 6th Nov 2019

Please find below comment from Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of the mental health charity SANE, on the study by the Royal College of Psychiatrists that finds England needs hundreds of new hospital beds to prevent the practice of sending mental health patients out of area for treatment:

“It has been well-known for years that the relentless agenda to close down psychiatric beds has caused widespread distress and neglect, leading to unacceptable levels of under-treatment.

“The policy of care in the community should allow people to be treated near their homes and families in familiar surroundings, yet far too many people contacting us are being shunted around the country like unwanted parcels. We believe this has led to ever more patients left at risk of self-harm and suicide.

“If we are to treat mental illness with the same seriousness as physical illness, those too ill to remain at home should be able to have inpatient care close to the place where they live. Instead the NHS long-term plan makes no commitment to the extra beds needed, and will instead focus on community services which cannot always substitute for hospital care.”
