Specialist mental health crisis teams now in every major A&E
Added: 16th Jul 2019

A new study from NHS England shows there is now a specialist psychiatric liaison service in every major A&E department in the country.Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of SANE, says:“This is a significant and welcome step, but the bitter reality for people with severe mental illness is that all too many are attending A&E in desperation because there is nowhere else to turn.

“We need more investment to increase staffing in often chronically overstretched community teams, and to ensure that there are sufficient local hospital beds for those in greatest need.

“Without this, liaison teams will have nowhere to direct people when they are at their most vulnerable, other than back home to wait for a visit from a specialist team, or a phone call that might never come.”
