Seven marathons in seven days
Added: 20th Jul 2018

Star fundraiser Mike Ruocco amazingly completed 177 miles in 7 days in memory of his friend.

Mike ran with his friend who organised the event; sadly last year, his friend lost his brother-in-law Ed to suicide.

The two of them decided they wanted to raise awareness of suicide by setting off on the breath taking, yet challenging, Cornish Coastal Path.

‘The biggest killer of men aged 20-49 in the UK is suicide… hopefully I can raise plenty of money to support SANE, enough to make a difference to the lives of those suffering with mental health problems.’

The route equates to the same length and time as 7 marathons in 7 days! They both ran/trekked/walked and crawled their way along the path and finished in Falmouth!

Each place they visited meant something special to Ed.

Never having embarked on something so strenuous in the past, Mike felt he was underprepared for his venture.  He didn’t train enough, he forgot to pack blister plasters and tape and he also underestimated how difficult the challenge would be.

‘We had to contend with boiling sun, driving wind and rain, precarious ascents and sheer descents but it was all worth it. The sense of achievement at the end was near euphoric.’

Despite his worries, he still came away with a huge sense of achievement and a huge donation for SANE of £2,801!

‘SANE can now fully train 2 volunteers for the SANEline and more people in crisis will have someone to listen to their call. You have helped make a real difference.’

Simone Moraes, SANE Community and Events Officer

He has been greatly supported by his family and friends and we want to thank all those who donated to Mike’s page. Without your generosity, Mike would not have exceeded his target and this amount will really help SANE help those who are suffering.

We also would like to thank Mike and his friend for their hard work on making their ambitious fundraiser such a success! Your love for Ed was shown by your courage and determination and we praise you on raising vital awareness of this cause.

‘Ed’s suicide made me realise that mental health issues can affect anyone and often people are suffering in silence. I hope that the money I’ve raised can make a difference.’

Thank you!
