Scaling new heights for SANE
Added: 3rd Nov 2017

SANE supporter Stuart Green ran the Brooks Snowdonia Marathon on 28th October and raised over £2,500.  He completed the demanding and spectacular route, encircling Snowdon (Wales’ and England’s highest peak) in 4 hours and 11 minutes.

Speaking to us after the event, he said:

'I’ve run five marathons before but had never attempted anything like Snowdonia – it is a brilliant event.  The views were stunning, the course was challenging, the supporters were enthusiastic and all of the organisers and other runners were just so friendly.  We were lucky with the weather too – mild temperatures, light rain and no wind made it enjoyable conditions for running.  It was just an amazing day!'

Stuart, who is a member of Royston Runners in North Hertfordshire, decided to raise money for SANE as he’s seen a number of friends and colleagues suffering from poor mental health in recent years.

'I think the work that SANE is doing is invaluable.  As well as providing care and initiating research, it’s the efforts to raise awareness and combat stigma about mental illness that is so critical.'

It’s a much bigger problem than many realise.  I’m proud to work for Accenture, an organisation with a strong mental health agenda and an ambition to promote an atmosphere where all employees feel they can talk about mental health as openly and honestly as people talk about physical health.  Our ‘Mental Health Allies’ help get the message across that it’s okay to talk about mental health, and they know what to do if they or a colleague need support.'

Stuart used JustGiving to support his fundraising efforts and it was great to see some of his donors being so open about their own experiences. You can find his page here.

'I was particularly touched to get a £20 donation from a complete stranger who’d found my page via Twitter.  He or she said it was a cause that was especially close to their heart as they suffer from bipolar.'
