Marjorie Wallace CBE, founder and chief executive of SANE, was awarded honorary membership of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) at its general assembly on 10th October.

This award, one of the highest honours that the WPA can bestow on an individual, was decided unanimously and has been given in recognition of Marjorie’s hard work and contribution to psychiatry and mental health.

The WPA is an association of national psychiatric societies aimed at increasing knowledge and skills necessary for work in the field of mental health and care for the mentally ill. Its member societies currently number 138, spanning 118 countries and representing more than 200,000 psychiatrists.

The WPA organises the World Congress of Psychiatry every three years. It also organises international and regional congresses and meetings, and thematic conferences. It has produced educational programmes and books and developed ethical guidelines for psychiatric practice.
