Determined fundraisers for SANE set a new world record by popping the most balloons on a burlesque costume.
Sapphira, an Islington burlesque artist, put on the record attempt for International Women’s Day and 46 people participated in popping a total of 74 balloons on her sparkling dress.
Spectators at the event, which was held at Juju's Bar & Stage in Shoreditch in London, were encouraged to pay ‘£1 a pop’, with all the money going towards the work and services provided by the mental health charity SANE.
A total of £143.58 was collected from the day, which also included burlesque classes and fun activities.
Speaking about the achievement, Sapphira said: “This fundraising event is part of a series of fundraisers I am hosting this year to shine a light on mental illness and share with others that if I have overcome bipolar, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
“With over 10 million British women feeling depressed about their looks and one in three likely to suffer mental illness, International Women’s Day provided an important moment to be #BeBoldForChange and burlesque was the perfect way to raise funds for SANE, a charity I support.”
The balloons were generously donated by Duncan Mundell, owner of Party Super Stores.
Organisers are also giving a special thanks to Marianne Cheesecake and Fey Au Lait who both donated burlesque performances to add to more sparkle to the event.
