SANE comment on cannabis study linking early use with lower IQ
Added: 28th Aug 2012

Please find below comment from Marjorie Wallace CBE, chief executive of SANE, on research from the Dunedin study in New Zealand which found that those who started using cannabis below the age of 18 suffered a drop in IQ:

“While at SANE we have been all too aware of how cannabis can rob children of their life chances, we believe this study should not detract from its devastating effects of creating psychotic symptoms and altering the thoughts, feelings and health of the minds of young people.

“Moreover, no-one should get the impression that cannabis is safe for those over 18 years old. In a significant minority of people who are vulnerable the drug can act as a trigger to illnesses like schizophrenia which may last a lifetime.”
