Please find below comment from Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of the mental health charity SANE, on the case of Hannah Bonser, who was today convicted of the murder of 13-year-old Casey Kearney in Doncaster in February 2012:
“This is a heartbreaking story which has lead to incalculable grief for a family who should never have had to suffer such bereavement.
“What is also shocking is the way in which the mental illness of a profoundly disturbed and neglected young woman was never given the attention needed and that the obvious and alarming deterioration in her mental state was ignored.
“It seems Hannah Bonser felt she was not safe in the community and begged to be sectioned in hospital yet despite her pleas for help she was not admitted or given any consistent care.
“Our own experience suggests that one in three such homicides by a person with mental illness or disorder involving a stranger could have been prevented had steps been taken when warning signs emerged.”
