Please find below comment from Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of the mental health charity SANE, on the Care Quality Commission’s second annual report on the use of the Mental Health Act:
“A disturbing finding of this report is that in many cases staff are not ascertaining patients’ views and wishes about their care plans, nor even providing copies of these plans.
“But our major concern is the delay in admission for people assessed as being at risk because of a lack of beds. This can lead to untold distress for patients and families and in some cases tragic consequences.
“The findings paint a bleak picture of the care and treatment provided to people detained under the Mental Health Act.”
