Research into internet usage and depression

Comment from Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of the mental health charity SANE, on University of Leeds research into internet usage and depression:

"This online survey found about 16 people out of more than 1300 who spend too much time on the internet and are depressed. Given that as many as one in four of us will experience depression at some point, we are – if anything – somewhat surprised that the figures are so low.

"There is a danger that excessive use of the internet might lead some people to substitute the virtual contact of chat rooms and social networks for real human interaction. SANE is also particularly concerned about websites that encourage eating disorders, self harm or suicide amongst young people.

"But this study tells us very little about whether there is anything particularly damaging about using the internet. Like television and other media, it can be comforting to some and damaging to others."
