Fundraising is a great way to support better mental health. Whether it’s running a marathon, organising an event or taking part in a sponsored activity, there is a whole array of things you can do.
In this video we hear about Claire’s experience of running the British 10K for people affected by mental illness:
One in four of us will be affected by mental illness at some point in our lives. In the UK, there are up to ten million men, women and children suffering from mental health problems at any one time. However, the impact of mental illness extends far further than the person who experiences it; experts estimate 6-10 more people are affected.
SANE improves quality of life for anyone affected by mental illness, including family, friends and carers. We achieve this by providing confidential help, expert information and practical advice. Anyone can access emotional support, free of charge, at any time of day or night, 365 days a year. SANE relies on voluntary income to fund its work.
In 2012, money raised and donated by SANE supporters enabled 30,000 individuals to receive free, confidential emotional support. Marie told us what this meant to her when she felt isolated, lonely and frightened:
“Before I found SANE I thought I was suffering alone. I knew that something was wrong, but I kept thinking I would snap out of it. I was so ashamed that I felt so bad. It’s such a relief to know I’m not alone; that support is out there – that SANE is out there.”
£1,000 allows us to invest in the training and development of a SANE volunteer through our in-house specialist programme. Over the course of a year, this volunteer will support 575 people, just like Marie.

“Supporting mental health is wonderful choice, because so many people are in need of urgent help. Your involvement has the dual benefit of raising vital funds, while also helping to challenge stigma and promote acceptance. I’m really grateful for your help and goodwill.”
