London to Dusseldorf cycle gets the ball rolling for John Lewis Charity of the Year partnership
Added: 23rd Jul 2012

SANE is delighted to have been chosen as the John Lewis Corporate Partners' Charity of the Year for 2012-2014.

The Partners have got lots of exciting fundraising plans - below we hear from Peter Coleman, Commercial Analyst at the Partnership:

This year the John Lewis Partnership Property Services Charity Challenge is heading to Germany Dusseldorf in aid of SANE. We will be leaving Partnership House on the morning of Wednesday 5th September to start our 340 mile journey.

Day 1: 88 miles to Dover - this is likely to prove the toughest day given the hilly terrain outside London, although not in the same league as the Tour De France guys!

Day 2: Leave Dover on a 6am ferry to Dunkerque for an 85 mile ride to Gent, Belgium.

Day 3: Promises to be a tough day with 111 miles from Gent to Roosteren (Holland)

Day 4: Finally arrive in Dusseldorf on the shortest days ride at 56 miles, for which by then I'm sure there will be many a sore undercarriage and tired legs!

5 countries in 4 days - 340 miles covered.

Throughout we are supported by two support vehicles, one that will be providing signage directions and the other food & drink and general support, should anyone require it.

Of the 26 cyclist the mix are John Lewis & Waitrose Partners and our supply chain i.e. consultants and contractors. The experience levels of cyclists range from a couple of club riders to those that haven't been on a bike in many a year.

What tends to happen, and no doubt will again this year, is that once away, from the start of each morning the group settles into smaller groups whereby we all find our own comfort speed. There may be a difference at the end of each day of a couple of hours between the first getting in to the last. The emphasis is that this is not a race and is meant to be a fun, albeit tough challenge.

On the last day into Dusseldorf, we meet as a full group just outside of town and cycle in together to revel in the achievements of all, and for a welcome glass of chilled fizz and a warm welcome from the support crew.

I'm sure many a story of the days events will be told over a pint and dinner in the evening, and even many months & years later.

To get this off the ground is a real team effort for which I can't take all the credit.  In addition to myself we have:

Chris La Thangue - fellow organiser
Fiona Burn - Admin guru - Head of hotel, ferry & flight bookings etc
James Lavender - Route and Jersey design guru
Jeremy Foyle - Head of Support Crew

SANE wishes all of the riders the very best of luck for this amazing challenge! Visit: www.justgiving.com/JLP-London-Dusseldorf-Cycle-Event to make a donation.
