Celebrate International Youth Day and Empower the Youth by Amanda

International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12th. I feel that this day is important because so many young men and women need to know that they are cared about.

There are many things that you can do to help show a young person in your life that you care. You can call and check on them. Calling and just saying hello and asking how they are doing can help boost you and that young person’s mood.

You can volunteer at a local charity.  Donating your time can help benefit young people in your local community. This shows them that people do care about what is going on in their lives.

You can also donate items that you no longer need to a young person in need. This can be something as simple as a book so they can celebrate Book Lover’s Day.

Be sure to reach out to a young person in your life to let them know that they are valued.

Empowering the Youth

There are several things that you can do to remind the youth of today that they are important for tomorrow’s future.

Remind them that they can dream big and achieve their goals. When I was a young teenager, I wanted to graduate from high school with my regular rather than my special education diploma. The head of the special education department was worried that if I failed at this task, that I would lose my self-esteem. However, my mother and several of my teacher’s believed that I could graduate with my diploma. It took me five years in total to graduate with my regular diploma. In May of 2008 I receive my diploma with academic honors. That fall I continued my academic studies at my local college. So remind them that they can achieve any goal that they may have.

Remind them to give back to their own community by volunteering. There are several charities and organizations that they can choose from! Giving back to their own communities can help them with their self-esteem and help them make friends.

Remind them to take care of their own physical and mental health. If you see a young person struggling remind them there are charities and other great resources out there for them to use. Remind them that it is okay to reach out for help.

Perhaps one of those resources could be a SANE blog!

Happy International Youth Day everyone!
