Afternoon. I’m here at SANE once again, and I’ve been looking for images pertaining to mental health online, you know, cartoons, gifs and the like. It’s to put on our Twitter page, and to portray mental health in a slightly less heavy tone than is normal.

Being on the Autistic Spectrum myself, I found an image to do with Autism. It basically gives the message that we can all live fulfilling lives. We are all on the spectrum aren’t we? There are traits like having routine, not wanting to hear extraneous noise, not liking making small talk with others, misunderstanding and misreading social cues from others. It’s just some people don’t want to admit they’re on the spectrum. Autism is there from birth, and is there until the very end. It’s just we don’t get diagnosed until much later in life.

Autism is largely responsible for my feelings of major anxiety and panic, and was also responsible for the depression that took hold back in 2007. I can see that now, I couldn’t then. I’m learning to manage things now, so I don’t mention it much, but it lurks in the background. I’ve learnt to live with it. That’s what we all do with mental illness, isn’t it? Learning how to live with it. Taking one day at a time. It’s a well worn cliché, but one that is so true. Try not to plan far in advance. Concentrate on the now.

That’s enough rambling for now. But remember, we’re all on the spectrum……
