Details in the fabric

If you haven’t heard the song Details in the fabric by Jason Mraz and James Morrison, you’re majorly missing out. So go listen to it now and make your life that little bit better. I want to make the point here that Music is a life-saver. That song and its magical, beautiful lyrics saved me.

Music gets a bad rap. I’m sure you’ve heard the spiel about how heavy metal music causes suicide and self- harm and rap music causes violence and encourages gang culture. I think a lot of those speeches are based on gross exaggeration; music is society’s scapegoat sometimes. But I personally couldn’t think of a better tool to save your life and to save you as a person.

People are awesome in general. But sometimes you find yourself in a situation of complete isolation. I know I did. In my situation I had cut ties with everyone. My best friends, my parents and teachers; I had nobody. Isolation is a hard thing to deal with at the best of times but when it’s accompanied by mental illness it can be extremely difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel and it’s not difficult to see why some people (including myself) turn to suicide and self-harm.

Back to that song. The whole point of it is that it is the little things in life that push people over the edge. Whether it’s exam stress, family troubles or money problems; it’s the little segments of our lives that stress us out the most. And the simple advice of the song?

Hold your own,
Know your name,
And go your own way,
And everything,
Will be fine...
