To The Lighthouse (And Back) celebrates recovery from mental illness and heralds the launch of a new local user-led mental health group, Mental Fight Club. The images and the writings brought together in this exhibition document a symbolic trip to Lundy Island in February 2003 by professional photographer and Mental Fight Club member Stephen Burrows.
The free show will be held from 8th March to 15th May 2005 at Southwark Cathedral Refectory in London (open 10am-5pm).
Accompanying the show is a new book entitled ‘No Man Is An Island: Back From the Lighthouse’ by Sarah Wheeler, who is Mental Fight Club’s Founder-Director and has personally experienced severe bi-polar depersonalisation disorder.
For more information see www.into.org.uk/mentalfightclub.
Mental Fight Club emerged informally in 2003/04 as a creative association of over 200 individuals who met eight times to perform and listen to the eight sections of Ben Okri's poem ‘Mental Fight’. Of this founding membership, 52% have direct experience of mental illness either as sufferers or carers. Thanks to funding by the South East London Community Foundation, Mental Fight Club will be officially launched with an audio-visual presentation of the first section of ‘Mental Fight’ entitled ‘Time To Be Real’ at Guy’s Chapel on 23rd April 2005.
