News > Swimming in a shark infested tank for SANE

Created: 2009-11-18 12:07:53

Sophia Gill, an ardent campaigner and contributer to SANE's research projects, has faced a lifetime fear of water yet swam with sharks in her own fundraising initiative.

This remarkable feat of bravery has raised over £500 in valuable funds for SANE’s vital activities. The challenge took place at the Blue Planet Aquarium in Cheshire.

Here is a short extract from her description of how she experienced the day:

"So how did it feel? Horrible! I could sense my breathing was fast and furious, but couldn’t slow it down. I felt myself holding breaths and then trying to compensate for the lack of air, and I was focussing so hard on telling myself to breath, that I lost all other motor functions. I actually couldn’t even move my arms!  The staff were excellent, and constantly checked we were all fine and gave me the thumbs up.  Julie, our underwater guide, was busy pointing out the sharks to us as if merely communicating on land.

"p.s I did get my revenge-I had fishcakes for dinner."
