Risk of suicide in clinical trials of antidepressants in adults

Created: 2009-08-11 13:28:08

Comment from Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of the mental health charity SANE, on the study into the risk of suicide in clinical trials of antidepressants in adults; published in the British Medical Journal:

“We are well aware of the risks to younger people and hope that fewer prescriptions for antidepressants will be issued now that psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy are recommended as a first line treatment.

“It is important to note however that the researchers have found no increased risk of suicide in adults over 25, for whom antidepressants may remain a vital choice in the fight for recovery.”
