School Fundraising
Schools are an ideal place to combine fundraising with awareness-raising about mental illness. With mental ill health affecting 1 in 4 people, many children and young adults will be aware of the impact these illnesses can have on their family and friends. Eating disorders, anxiety problems, depression and self harm are all issues which children and young adults may be affected by but which are rarely discussed with them or explained fully. Making it acceptable to discuss mental ill health at a young age will help to reduce the stigma still so often attached to mental illness. If you are interested in working with SANE, please download our “Fundraising at School” advice sheet or contact us for more information.
Teachers
- Incorporate the issues affecting children and families with mental illness into your lesson plans. Biology and Citizenship are two examples of subject areas where this maybe possible.
- Organise a Mental Health Day at school and ask your students to put forward ideas for fundraising as part of the themed event. You could ensure that your mental health day takes place on the same day as the World Mental Health day and link in with the activities taking place worldwide.
- SANE may even be able to arrange to give a talk at your school focusing on mental health problems that are particularly relevant to children and young adults. Contact us to find out more.
Students
- Ask your school to adopt SANE as its charity of the term or even of the year
- Get together with friends to organize fundraising activities. Past examples include a charity fashion show, a collection at the school play and a charity car wash!
- Organize a music concert, a sports tournament or even a fashion show to raise funds for the charity.
- We would also be interested to hear your ideas. And remember, if you do organise an event, don’t forget to tell us how it goes, and if possible send us photographs!
