Leaving a Legacy

Making a donation through your Will can make a real difference to so many people's lives. What is more, it's also good to know that bequests to charity are subject to far fewer tax deductions.

Leaving a legacy to SANE ensures that we can still be there in the years to come to help people affected by severe mental illness. At SANE, we want to continue raising awareness and respect for those affected by mental illness, undertaking research into the causes of serious mental illness and providing information and emotional support to those experiencing mental health problems, their families and carers.

Making a donation through your Will makes a real difference to many people's lives and the advantage is that you don't have to part with money today. It's also good to know that bequests to charity attract neither Inheritance Tax nor Income Tax and are also exempt from Capital Gains Tax.

What gift can benefit SANE in your Will

A Will often consists of a number of specific gifts of money or property to family and friends. What is left over (called the residue) is then left to whoever you choose.

It is important to make a Will, otherwise the law will decide who is to receive your property according to strict rules which may not reflect your wishes.

After you have provided for your family and friends in your Will you can benefit SANE by leaving a fixed sum of money, the residue of your estate or a share of the residue.

If you want your gift to benefit a specific SANE project (such as our SANEline service or our medical research), consider naming another SANE project or SANE's registered office (1st Floor Cityside House, 40 Adler Street, London, E1 1EE) as a substitute beneficiary in case the project you choose today closes down in the future.

You can leave a house to someone either as a specific item or part of the residue of your estate. It is also possible to leave a life interest in a house to someone so that they can still live in it with the house going to SANE when they die. If you are considering leaving a large item, like a property, to SANE please get in touch with us to discuss the details.

How to word your bequest to SANE

If you wish to support SANE by leaving the whole of your estate or a share of it in your Will, the recommended wording is:

"I give the residue (or" a ... % share") of my estate to the SANE (Registered charity No.296572) of 1st floor Cityside House, 40 Adler Street, London, E1 1EE and the receipt of the Secretary or other proper officer for the time being of SANE shall be a complete discharge for my Executors..."

or

"I give the sum of £___ to SANE (Registered charity No.296572) of 1st floor Cityside House, 40 Adler Street, London, E1 1EE and the receipt of the Secretary or other proper officer for the time being of SANE shall be a complete discharge for Executors."

We recommend that you always seek the professional advice of a solicitor when drawing up or updating your Will.
