Living with Schizophrenia aims to fill a hole in information and self-help guides market by addressing the needs of people with schizophrenia and their carers, relatives, and friends. Topics include an authoritative description of what schizophrenia is and isn't, information and support for families and friends, how they can help, diagnosis, physical treatments, psychological treatments (talking therapies) and social interventions.
FROM THE FOREWORD BY MARJORIE WALLACE:
Unlike other common illnesses such as heart disease or diabetes, schizophrenia is both feared and misperceived by the general public. Selective reporting by the media of the rare headline tragedies involving people with mental illness (usually untreated) creates the impression that schizophrenia sufferers are often dangerous and unpredictable. This is unfair to the majority, who are far more at risk of harming themselves than others, and only adds to the already heavy burden of stigma and isolation carried by schizophrenia sufferers and their carers. The stigma, principally born of ignorance, is no more justified in schizophrenia than in any other illness, and only makes the day-to-day struggle against the condition all the more onerous.
Living with schizophrenia can be very lonely, both for sufferers and their families. By learning about the symptoms and treatments of their illness, discussing it openly, and seeking the help they need, they become better able to alleviate their fears and regain personal control over their lives. This should in turn give them a better chance of leading a stable and fulfilling life and in many cases of making a sustained recovery.
Though information on schizophrenia is freely available in the public domain, much of it is hard to find, unreliable, inconsistent and - because of the uncontrolled nature of the internet - unnecessarily depressing. Much of what is easily accessible is aimed at scientists and healthcare professionals, rather than at sufferers and their carers. This book has been prepared specially for the benefit of the latter. By leading them to a better understanding of the illness and its treatments, from medication to psychological and other therapies, and guiding them through their day-to-day battles, it should serve as a giant first step on their journey to recovery.
