Man_with_head_in_handsAbout Mental Illness

One in four of us will be affected by mental illness at some point in our lives. This may include anxiety, addiction, obsession, phobia, depression, bipolar disorder, personality disorder, schizophrenia or an eating disorder.

These conditions can lead to profound emotions of despair and thoughts of suicide. People's experiences can often be further complicated by alcohol or drug addiction.

Mental illness touches virtually every person in society. As a result most, if not all of us, will be impacted in some way.

There are many misconceptions about mental illness, often fuelled by images we see on television and stories we read in the media.

SANE is committed to helping people with these conditions as well as their families, carers and health professionals.

One way we achieve this is by making information available. You can find out more on our mental health conditions page; which gives detailed explanations of conditions, their symptoms and treatment options.  It also provides information for families, friends and carers, as well as an overview of talking treatments.

In the following video, people share their personal experience of how mental illness affects their internal world.

If you are concerned about your own or someone else's mental health, you may like to consider contacting SANEline or SANEmail. These services allow us to offer further information and emotional support. Both services are confidential.

Alternatively, you can visit our Support Forum where peer-to-peer advice and help is available. We have also created a Crisis page, which lists a range of support resources that are available in times of need.
