One in four of us will be affected by mental illness at some point in our lives. This may include depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, manic depression, phobia, obsession or an eating disorder to name but a few. People's experiences can often be further complicated by alcohol or drug addiction.
These conditions can leave people confused and isolated and this in turn can lead to profound feelings of despair and even thoughts of suicide.
There are many misconceptions about mental illness, often fuelled by the images that we see on television and the 'scare stories' that we read in the media.
SANE is committed to helping people with these conditions as well as their families, carers and health professionals. This section contains information sheets written by SANE in collaboration with mental health professionals and service users. You will also find information relating to treatments, including medical treatments, antidepressants and talking treatments.
If you are concerned about your own or someone else's mental health, you may like to consider contacting SANEline on 0845 767 8000, or SANEmail on sanemail@sane.org.uk. A volunteer may be able to offer further information and support. Both services are confidential. Alternatively if you are in crisis and need help go to the Need help now? page for information about sources of support.
For a printed version of the listed information sheets, please contact email us or call Sara Zmertych on 020 7422 5557. Alternatively, you can download a literature order form.
